Princess Mt. McKinley Lodge Alaska

Staff member
Princess Mt. McKinley lodge is one of the lodges that Princess uses on some of its land packages. This lodge is at mile marker 133 on the Parks highway. This is just inside the Denali State Park. This lodge has one of the great views of Mt. McKinley or as the native people call it Denali. It is 40 miles from the mountain but Denali is so much higher then the rest of the mountains in the area that you will not mistake seeing Denali. The one bad thing about seeing the mountain is that you can only see it 30% of the time because it creates its own clouds that hide the mountain. When it is out it is a spectacular view. With the sun up if you are staying at the lodge you can have them call you anytime of the day so you can see it even if it is at 3 in the morning.

The lodge is not like a hotel. There are many buildings that house guests at the lodge. They are spread out so there are shuttles running around all the guest housing from morning until evening. The rooms are nice but nothing exceptional. You will not find coffee makers and such things in the room.

The main lodge they does have a bar, coffee shop, restaurant and gift shop in it. It also has a smallmeeting room or theater as they call it. It this theater do have lectures by rangers about the area., They also have some lectures on various things that happend in Alaska such as the biggest earthquake and WWII battles. Most lectures are free occasionaly they do have a charge for some shows.

There is also another restaurant on the premises that is a short distance from the main lodge. The grounds are very nice with some nice hiking trails. There are tours sold from the lodge. not in great numbers but they are some good tours. There is also a small spa with a hot tub and small pool and sauna on the property.

You have a good chance of seeing moose and bear while on the property, however for safety sake they do block off hiking trails if wildlife is seen. The moose and bear do walk through the property and you may see them from your room or from the deck on the main lodge.

There is a shuttle bus that will take you from the lodge to a town called Talkeetna. This is about an hour drive and does have a fee attached to it. The town is small but does have some nice shops and restaurants in it. The town is the starting point for anyone that plans on climbing Mt. McKinley. The town is worth taking a trip into if you have the time.

Now this is my own personal opinion but for the price they charge to stay at the lodge it is not worth staying there unless the mountain is visible but as I said that is only 30% of the time. It is a nice lodge it is kept up well but a bit expensive for what you get.
