HALIFAX — An early and busy cruise ship season has begun at the Port of Halifax.

The port will host a record 131 vessel visits between now and early November, bringing an estimated 215,000 to 220,000 passengers.

That's about 40,000 more than in 2007.

The economic impact from passengers and crew this year is expected to be around $25-million.

The first ship, the 584-passenger Amadea, docked Monday in Halifax.

The Port of Sydney, N.S., begins its cruise season May 13 and has 50 scheduled vessel visits.
