From Cruise News Daily (CND):

"Our sources tell us that the former 1960's P&O liner Oriana, which has been serving as a hotel ship in China for the many years, is finally headed to the ship breakers at Alang. The 42,000 ton ship, which was built in 1959 sailed for 26 years under the P&O flag, sported one of most distinctive and recognizable profiles ever.

She was damaged in a storm last year and capsized at her pier. She was eventually righted and towed to a chinese ship yard where the damage was assessed. At one point, it was thought she might return to service as a hotel ship but last week it was decided that she would be worth more as scrap. She is expected to depart for India within the next few weeks."

Such sad news bdacruiser, she was such a lovely ship - another great liner shortly on it's way to Alang :cry:

Does anyone on this forum know who was the architect and builder
of this vintage Oriana ? I bought a small scale model aboard the Queen
Mary a few years ago, and find the overall design intrigueing. Perhaps
it underwent several modifications over the years. Sure looks like
several add-ons.

Not sure of the designer but here are some specs.

"Built by Vickers-Armstrong Shipbuilders, Limited a, Barrow-in-Furness, England, 1960
41,923 Gross Tons, 804 feet long, 73 feet wide, 31 foot draft. Steam Turbines,
twin screw, Service speed 27.5 knots. 2134 passengers (638 First Class,
1496 Tourist Class.
Built for the P&O-Orient Line (British Flag). Southampton - Australia and
around-the-world services. Transferred to P&O Lines, 1966. Sold to
Japanese buyers, 1986 and refitted
as a museum ship at Beppu Bay, Japan."

Since then, ORIANA has had a rather sad career and, as seen above,
appears headed for the breaker's yard.
