It has been announced that the New Zealand port of Lyttelton is to build a new cruise ship berth which will be able to berth the largest cruise ships in service at a cost of NZ £ 56 million and which is expected to be ready for the 2019 / 2020 season !

The port is near to the city of Christchurch which suffered some major damage in recent earthquakes.

At the main New Zealand port of Auckland mega size cruise ships have to anchor in the harbour, and tender up to 8,000 people ashore, due to there being no berth for these cruise ships to use.

A short distance from New Zealand is the south pacific kingdom of Tonga and at the main port of Nuku'alofa they have a new cruise ship berth which can commodate these mega cruise ships with the resulting increase in the number of cruise ships calling at this beautiful island.

Picture of the Tongan royal palace which was built of timber in 1867 and has recently been renovated and extended.

The palace is on the water front area near where cruise ships berth. .
