New Australian Cruise Port of Call

Earlier this year the Australian based RCI Cruises 90,090 grt cruise ship ' Radiance of the Seas ' made a maiden call at Port Kembla, which is about 82 kilometers from Sydney and very near to the city of Wollongong.

Various tours were operated and the reports from her 2,400 passengers suggest that they enjoyed the visit with more now being planned by RCI Cruises on their Australian cruises.

The main Australian port of Sydney has only one limited size berth available for cruise ships, which can not sail under the harbour bridge !

Due to the congestion which is often caused in Sydney, with the port authority not providing more berths for the larger cruise ships, it looks as if this could lead to more calls at Port Kembla, from cruise ships operating in Australian waters, and one day could even be used as a turn round port with the right facilities !

The Port Kembla website suggests the harbour has a depth of about 40 feet, on some berths, so it could accomodate even larger cruise ships with the resulting loss of business to Sydney after years of complaints from the operators of cruises ships about the lack of berths in the port of Sydney.

Sometimes they have had to anchor in the harbour and then ferry unhappy passengers ashore !
