Mexico’s newest port is ‘on the map’

Known for pioneering new destinations, Holland America Line is putting Mexico’s Puerto Chiapas on the map, with a total of 15 calls planned this year and next. The first, by Ryndam, was last month.

‘I am delighted to report that this destination exceeded our expectations,’ said HAL’s Timothy Littley, manager deployment and itinerary planning, who noted that passengers rated Puerto Chiapas 8.29 out of a possible 9.

‘This is an unheard of rating for a new, unknown and unproven destination and only underscores the potential of this great new Mexican destination,’ Littley told media.

HAL added Puerto Chiapas to a number of its Panama Canal cruises, with Volendam due to call on Saturday, and four other visits in 2007 followed by nine in 2008.

Puerto Chiapas has come a long way since hosting its first cruise call, The World of ResidenSea, one year ago. Now, in addition to Holland America, it has booked visits by Celebrity Cruises, Crystal Cruises and Regent Seven Seas.

‘We had to build awareness and visibility. We’ve done a good job of getting it on the map,’ said Henry Yaniz, Florida-based liaison to the cruise industry for the state of Chiapas. ‘Now the focus moves to making the destination work better, whether it’s shore excursions or services for the ship, whatever needs beefing up.’
