The Portugese tropical Atlantic Ocean island of Madeira has four cruise ships calling at the port of Funchal today.

Berthed are the small Fred Olsen Cruises ship ' Braemar ' in the companies new colour scheme of dark grey hulls with a rouge red topping, Saga Cruises ' Saga Sapphire ', Thomson Cruises ' Thomson Majesty ', and Aida Cruises ' Aidablu '.

The temperatures are forecast to reach about 23 c today but there is a storm forecast in the area for this evening, with gale force winds, so the cruise ships may have a choppy ride when they sail.

Visiting the Maderia port of Funchal today is the P & O Cruises ship ' Ventura ' and the deluxe cruise ship ' Seabourn Odyssey '.

It is interesting to see that the Seabourn cruise ship will have over 12 hours at the port but the P & O Cruises ship will only spend about 10 hours at the port.

These reduced times spent in port by the P & O Cruises ships, and many other cruise ships operated by the ' Carnival ' group of cruising companies, are reported to be saving the group many millions of dollars in fuel costs due to the reduced speed the cruise ships now operate at between port calls !
