The Star Ferry Pier near Edinburgh Place in the Central, Hong Kong will be demolished later this year. Despite a public outcry, the old landmark pier which opened in December 15, 1957, is scheduled for demolition to make way for a coastal road and shopping center. A new terminal, will be constructed 200 meters away. The government will preserve only the clock, which would be disassembled and displayed inside the new terminal. The clock, which chimes every 15 minutes, was a gift from the King of Belgium to British government before it was given to the Star Ferry in celebration of the new pier opening.
