German Operated Cruise Ship Detained

It has been reported that the German operated cruise ship Vistamar has been detained at Belfast by the Maritime & Coastguard surveyors as a result of numerous faults being identified including fire doors that were missing or had faulty or missing catches !

The ship also did not meet ISM maintenance requirements.

Other faults found included liferaft lights not working and deficencies in the PA system.

The inspection has now been suspended pending an audit by an ISM auditor.

Once this has been completed the MCA surveyors will again check this ship and depending on their findings will depend if she can sail.

She is due to start her next cruise from Cuxhaven on the 8th June 2010.

Vistamar entered service in 1989.

She is about 7,498 grt and carries 330 passengers.

Sad News Neil,
remember she had engine trouble, was forced to withdraw last winter from her Gulf cruises, many weeks repair laid-up in Perama and now this. Ligabue the owner has certainly bad luck with this otherwise very popular vessel. Here a nice Video of her sailing in Greenlands Disco Bay watch here>>>>>

Hi sunshine, yes among many other things, but 2 years ago they purchased the vessel from her spanish owner - a hotel operator - who had enough. at the time ligabue was doing the entire hotel mngmnt. on board and I suppose they didnt want to loose yet another contract, having lost deilmann river and sea going vessel just before.

The AIS ship position maps are showing the Vistamar still berthed at Belfast today.

Yes indeed. Operator Plantours & Partner confirmed here, that no passengers are onboard and she will dock in Cuxhaven on the 8th, where she will again embark passengers for a cruise departing that day.

As she sailed with no passengers I wonder if all the repair work was completed.

From the first interview with passengers on the 4th May 2010, who were told the ship had mechanical problems, it appears the company were not giving their passengers the full details of the ships detention !

This was the second time this ship has been detained in the UK for deficiencies which leads one to wonder why she keeps having these problems.

Plantours & partner, the German Operator of the Vistamar, confirmed to me today, that 26 passengers remained onboard. these are elderly who refused to fly home. The ship is now scheduled to dock in Cuxhaven tomorrow at 6.30am and depart on a regular planned expedition cruise, which is almost sold out. No cancellation, although the vessel had a lot of negative press in Germany. Most of her guests are loyal repeaters any how, hardly any new comers.

With the bad publicity the ship will get in Germany, and with newer ships like those operated by Aida Cruises catering for the German market, they might now find they have a job selling berths on this 21 year old ship !

Neil,
the news here was limited to a few trade publications and not the main street newspapers. Also, Plantours & partner markets the vessel largely to groups, such as church, companies, universities, associations of various types. As the vessel has a limited space, they have no problem filling her up. Remember her past accidents and mishaps, which were far more serious and caused an outcry in the yellow press, have not harmed them.

No doubt this cruise ship will be subject to even more inspections, at ports of call, after the safety issues found in Belfast.
