Cruise crime legislation needed for Canada, says MP

OTTAWA - An Ontario MP is calling on Transport Canada to develop a system for reporting crimes that occur against Canadians while travelling aboard cruise ships, similar to an American method adopted over a year ago.

Brian Masse, MP for Windsor West, on Tuesday drafted a letter to Transport Minister Lawrence Cannon, asking him to implement a "zero-tolerance pledge" for all cruise lines. This would require all ships to report crimes against passengers to the relevant national authorities - for Canada, the RCMP.

"In the midst of yet another cruise ship season, Canadian passengers will again face risks from crimes perpetrated against them while on international cruise ships," he wrote.
