Did you sail on a line that is now defunct?

Cruised from Montreal to Bay of St. Lawrence on Polish Ocean Lines' Stefan Batory. Old tub (former 1952(?))Maasdam from HAL) But gracious hospitality unmatched by 20 cruises since. (Subtext was "This is how we'd run our country if the Soviets would let us...") Also best Polish joke ever--Staff...

    Carnival Tropicale. Archive photo

Sailed on one of her first voyages--Alaska from Vancouver (leased to Holland-America). Ship for its day nice enough but crew the dregs of the world's oceans--the only cruise I regretted taking . (I realize Carnival owns Cunard and Holland-America and Princess, but I will never take a...

What is Your Favorite Cruise Ship of the Past?

For spectacular, the France has to be in a class by itself. But for gemuetlichkeit its a tie between Italia's Leonardo da Vinci and Polish Ocean Lines' Stefan Batory--old tubs both, but a graciousness you don't see anymore.

On all other cruise lines "open seating" means the host seats you where it suits him/her(with, if you're lucky, a little input from you). On the Opera--miraculously--you could sit wherever YOU...

    Freighter Logistics

I contacted Laeisz directly some time ago and they sent me to Maris, which is a significant recommendation. I would also try The Cruise People in Toronto (www.thecruisepeople.ca) --they have a dedicated freighter desk and their communications are very good.

    MSC in Miami Autumn 2013

Open seating still means you can wander into the dining room and sit where you like? Still lots of Italian waiters and headwaiters? Still no tap water (Grr!!). Cabins bigger? More art in public spaces?? Better setting for afternoon tea? (Still have afternoon tea?)

And everybody thinks Costa will go out of business... Not only did HAL reuse the name, they commissioned a painting of the first Pdam for the stairwell!

    MSC in Miami Autumn 2013

Took the Opera transatlantic a few years ago--ship bland but food and service much better than I expected. Would love to hear from someone who sailed more recently and/or on the newer ships

    Freighter Logistics

There are several travel agencies that specialize in freighter travel--you should talk to them. The impression I get is that most officers (and they will be the ones you eat with) speak English.
