MS Zaandam - 4/6 - 4/21/2009 Hawaii Circle Tour

Default MS Zaandam - 4/6 - 4/21/2009 Hawaii Circle Tour

We traveled on The Zaandam in April of this year. The trip was delayed due to an injury my Partner suffered last Fall. Because I was not sure of how much time he might have needed in cabin I upgraded to a deluxe veranda suite.

Upon entering The Zaandam you are met with one of the warmest crew you could encounter. That warmth continues throughout the cruise. Staff members went out of their way to remember your name; bring you coffee; help in any way.

The Zaandam is nearing it's 10th year, and is scheduled for dry dock in January 2010. This cannot come soon enough. Upon entering the suite we saw just how much The Zaandam is dated. The wallpaper was stained, as well as the carpets. The bathroom is average by any standards. The furniture on the veranda needed to be replaced a while ago. The deluxe veranda suite was not what we had imagined.

The dating of The Zaandam shows throughout the ship. The Lido Restaurant carpeting is so worn in places the wear is down to the backing of the carpet.

Many of us Navy "vets" commented during the cruise that for no reason on occasion The Zaandam would shake and shudder throughout the ship for several seconds. We never could figure that one out.

Although aging (in some cases not gracefully) The Zaandam is tended to by a most dedicated staff, always polishing; cleaning; tidying up around the ship. The Zaandam is well cared for by it's crew.

The food on The Zaandam is excellent. Dining service in The Rotterdam Restaurant is attentive and friendly in every way. Many choices to be had, and special requests are never a problem.

Entertainment on The Zaandam is definitely geared toward a much older crowd. Some of the shows were good; however, many were, in our opinion, just fair. There is a terrific singer in The Ocean Lounge.

The best kept secret on The Zaandam has to be The Crows Nest at the top front of the ship. We went there many times before dinner and found it to be nearly empty, so we would have a drink and watch the ocean. One of the greatest places on the ship for sure.

Overall, a very nice cruise. I must be very honest in my opinion, however. It seems that Holland America Line is "cruising" on it's reputation. In general, the value for the money spent for this cruise was not there. We hope that The Zaandam comes from her dry dock refreshed and renewed.

Thank you for your honest review of Zaandam and your cruise experience on board her, John. It does sound like she needs some refreshing work done in many areas. The shuddering that you felt...just wondering if that was on choppy sea days, as one explanation could be propulsion out of the water momentarily, even a slight amount of prop out of the sea can cause quite significant shudders and vibrations...just an idea there

I am pleased that your experience in other areas such as the food and staff were good, that can really make up for many of the shortcomings elsewhere. Overall, it sounds like you enjoyed your cruise and despite a few niggles along the way, you didn't allow them to spoil the holiday

Thanks again for taking time to post your thoughts and experiences

Thanks for posting your review John! Let's hope Zaandam gets a nice refurbishment in dry dock and is looking spiffy once again.

Glad the appearance of the ship did not spoil your vacation. Pleased you both enjoyed yourselves.

Veendam is in dry dock in Freeport and Oosterdam is in dry dock in Sicily, are Holland America doing a series of upgrades to their vessels, as John seem to says it not before time.

Thanks for posting

Norman

We had a great time stalking you whilst away...Norman did a marvelous job of creating montages & Champ2 was plotting your every move too

As Norman has just said, HAL are gradually improving their ships, generally full refurbishments are done every 7-10 years with quick touch-ups done every 3-5 years, so Zaandam sounds about overdue for a makeover. It will be interesting to see how things improve once her drydock has been completed next year.

Hi again folks........The Zaandam was in dry dock for some three weeks back in 2005 for install of her exhaust scrubbing "green" technology......from what I gathered no touch-ups were done to any of the physical plant (cabins; interior) at that time......they would have done well to do a touch-up then, in my opinion. Would have made the ship not look so shopworn.

Norman - Champ - - thank you again for the wonderful stalking.....it is very much appreciated!!!!!!!

Hi John & Rick

An excellent review of your cruise.

Pleased to see that you enjoyed most of the cruise but it looks as if it was items that should have been taken care of that let down the appearance of the ship and the quality of the accomodation you had booked.

I can never understand why shipping companies let their ships get shabby with worn carpets, stained wallpaper etc.

ss Oriana cruised for P & O out of Sydney for about ten years.

If we noticed signs of any carpet wearing thin or becoming frayed it was replaced on turn round days in Sydney and not left until the yearly drydocking at Singapore !

We also carried four maintenance men for decorating work and other cosmetic repair work, as and when it was required, around the hotel side of the ship.

It is not a problem to put up some wet paint notices, while work is going on, and passengers do appreciate seeing that the ship is well maintained .

Finding cruise ships poorly maintained can put people off cruising with that company !
