Windstar Cruises contracted Wireless Maritime Services to provide cell phone capability at sea on all three ships beginning with Wind Surf in mid-December.

Networks will be installed on Wind Spirit in April and on Wind Star in December 2007.

Passengers will be able to make and receive calls using their own mobile phone, with text messaging and GPRS data service also available. The network will support GSM and CDMA phones.

Passengers will need to check that their phone is enabled for international roaming with their cellular carrier, and the carrier must have a roaming agreement with Wireless Maritime Services. Charges will appear on the customer’s regular monthly phone bill.

Windstar said cell phone service is intended primarily for use in passenger staterooms, and the line will issue guidelines for use. Talking on cell phones will not be permitted in public areas such as dining spaces or lounges, and passengers will be asked to set their phone’s ringer to vibrate when in public areas.
