I love sea days but not sure 2 days at sea would be much fun on a damaged ship, Swan

As Norman already said, the engine has lots of ancilliary duties apart from making the ship move forwards and backwards. Speculation is not a good thing but that engine being down could be causing many other problems on board that we don't know about...other electrical failures (apart from the AIS)...the possibilities are endless really.

I wonder if trading standards would be interested if a UK resident booked a cruise and then complained when they found out about the condition of the ships engines and for how long the problem has lasted !

Their brochures and web site show the ship as having a cruising speed of 18 knots which has been wrong for about six months so the details they are publishing are incorrect !

As Norman has mentioned, there must be a big strain on her remaining engines as from yesterdays speed of 15 knots it appears she must be running at a speed near to her present maximum which could cause damage to her other engines !

Hi

Well it was expected that nothing was being said by the Chairman and Directors about the problems with the engines on mv Discovery.

They appear to have kept quiet in all the UK news, and also on the websites, for about six months even though they must known about the problems with the ships engines !

I wonder what would happen if one of those engines that are working went bang in the Kiel Canal !

Re her recent AIS transmissions I have noticed there seems to be quite a big gap on some of the AIS maps once you leave the Rostock area until you get up to near Helsinki and Tallin in the Baltic sea.

I am wondering if she is turned off or if there is a shortage of shore stations or satalites, which ever is used, picking up her transmissions and sending out the information on her position.

We really need a technician on AIS for an answer.

I wonder how her passengers will fare at St Petersburg after the problems with the Australian cruise ship which was held up at a Russian port !

For Discovery to be out of AIS tranmission this long, there has got to have been some sort of electrical and/or equipment failure. There is no sign of her anywhere across the Baltic region. If she is still not transmitting when she enters her next port of call, she could be in trouble.

It is a pity that there is not an email address available for her...although there is a real chance that due to the engine problem, some of her 'added extras' such as her computer suite have been shut down to conserve electrical supply.

Worst case scenario would be that she is impounded with the AIS failure and her passengers flown home from wherever she happens to be. That would be expensive for VoD and I suspect would not be covered by their public liability insurance.

She will have been out of AIS for 24 hours in a little over 4 hours from now.

AIS is an electronic unit sending and receiving signals via sat and is located on the bridge of each ship, and not linked to the engine's in anyway, I doubt if this would be turned off as it is connected to the ships version of a data recorder.

Welcome to the family Bandos

Thanks for the description of where the AIS is on the bridge. If it did fail for any reason, would the crew on the bridge be aware of it...such as does it do anything to let the crew know that it has developed a fault, for example?

I know AIS doesn't have full coverage but when she was on a similar itinerary last week, we were able to find her alot more often than this week...and in areas of the Baltic region that she has not transmitted from this time around. Which suggests the possibility of a fault with the equipment..albeit an intermittant one.
