Star Cruises to pull out of Mumbai as a departure port
A fundamental change in India’s territorial waters has led Malaysia’s Star Cruises to stop cruises from the port of Mumbai.
For the past two seasons Star has homeported its 1,510 passenger capacity SuperStar Libra in Mumbai. However, the recent decision to widen India’s territorial waters from 20 nautical miles to 200 nautical miles, for tax purposes, has made cruises from this Indian port unviable. Before the new territorial limits came into effect, Star used to open its onboard services after reaching the 20 nm limits, usually 30 mins after sailing. Now these services will be taxed if offered with 200nm, which would take the vessel over five hours to reach after sailing from Mumbai.
