St Hellier Overview
Saint Helier is capital of the British crown dependency of Jersey, on Saint Aubin's Bay, in the English Channel. It is a residential community, seaport, and popular summer resort. St. Helier is also the main commercial and transportation center of the island. An 11th-century parish church, Victoria College (1852), a museum, and a zoo are here, and the late 16th-century Elizabeth Castle and the early 19th-century Fort Regent are nearby. Royal Square located here was the scene, in 1781, of a battle in which the French unsuccessfully sought to capture Jersey.
The Channel Islands' oldest settlement is a 'capital' of neat lines of Regency and Victorian buildings and narrow cobbled streets, steep stairways and alleyways weaving their way down between houses to a picturesque harbour - and has a special charm thanks to its unique Anglo-French pedigree. Points of interest include the medieval Castle Cornet (built by King John), Hauteville House (Victor Hugo's home during exile, where Les Miserables was penned) and delightful Candie Gardens - while a tour of the rocky coastline will reveal no less than 17 beautiful bays.
