The South Pacific territory of New Caledonia has posted another record year for cruising, announcing a 39 per cent increase in arrivals to 113,104 during 2006.
The result eclipses the 81,215 arrivals recorded during 2005 and the 77,000 recorded in 2004 - both record years in their own right. New Caledonia Tourism South Marketing Manager Jean-Michel Foutrein said cruising was now the most popular means of exploring New Caledonia and the territory's fastest growing tourism sector.
Mr Foutrein said New Caledonia had welcomed 82 cruises during 2006 and was scheduled to receive a further 89 during 2007, when arrivals were forecast to climb further towards 150,000. Mr Foutrein said the New Caledonian government was working to improve the cruise experience, remodelling the main Nouméa cruise terminal and introducing better information and signage for arriving passengers.
