Smile Papua New Guinea new destination for Aurora Expeditions

The Australian adventure travel company Aurora Expeditions, specialist in ship charters to remote destinations, will make its debut in Papua New Guinea next year.

The company will operate two back-to-back 11-day ‘Lost in Paradise’ voyages between Rabaul and Alotau aboard Akademik Shokalskiy.

The 48-passenger expedition ship, a sister to Polar Pioneer which has been chartered for Aurora’s 2007 Arctic programme, departs Rabaul for Alotau on May 25. She turns around June 4 for the return 11-day voyage to Rabaul.

The ship has a fleet of motorised Zodiacs to visit otherwise inaccessible islands and villages. A highlight of the voyages will be a short journey upstream from the mouth of the Sepik River where passengers will have the opportunity to buy the region’s much sought-after exotic carvings.

Akademik Shokalskiy offers a bar/lounge, dining room and a lecture room-cum-library, and all cabins have portholes. Fares for triple share accommodation start at A$4,490 (US$3,367) per person and the fare for a twin cabin with private facilities is A$6,590 (US$4,942) per person.
