Silver Shadow leaves on her first World Cruise to celebrities & celebrations
Actress and model Isabella Rossellini graced festivities last night in Florida as Silversea Cruises bid bon voyage to its full world cruise passengers. The line’s ambassador circulated at a cocktail reception and dined with guests during a dinner-dance at the landmark Boca Raton Resort & Club.
Silversea executives also mingled with the 143 passengers who are taking the entire 126-day world cruise, which departs today from Fort Lauderdale. Trumpeters heralded the guests into a banquet hall where oysters, caviar, lobster, Pommery champagne and other delicacies were served.
David Morris, Silversea’s evp sales and marketing for North America, called the line’s first circumnavigation an ‘historic event,’ with visits to 60 ports on six continents. Celebrity lecturers joining the voyage include newsman Walter Cronkite, political commentator William F. Buckley, film critic Rex Reed, Egyptologist Zahi Hawass and correspondent Lynn Sherr, who attended the Boca send-off.
Five exclusive shoreside events are planned, in Santiago, Auckland, Dubai, Safaga and Rome. ‘These are unique. You can’t buy them anywhere,’ according to Marilyn Conroy, vp sales, who credited the extensive enrichment extras as key selling points.
Joseph Proto, director of world cruise and business development for Silversea, said that in addition to the 143 full world cruise passengers, 45 are sailing at least 71 days and 80 are sailing 55 days. Silver Shadow’s capacity is 382.
Entertainment director Cliff Perry noted that a normal Silver Shadow cruise loads 1,300 pieces of luggage. This one will take 4,000. While most lines dispatch limos to take their full world cruisers to embarkation, Perry announced Silversea is sending a yacht. It will transport the guests to Port Everglades, where a marching band is among the scheduled bon voyage festivities.
