A CYPRUS cruise ship will this weekend be the host of pioneer telerobotic experiments at sea. Volunteer ‘patients’ on board Louis Cruise Lines’ Sapphire were testing long distance consultations with doctors in France and Cyprus.

The tele-ecographic examinations were being carried out by the research team of the Cyprus-France Telemedicine Research Programme MARTE (Mobile And Robotised Tele Echography).

Telemedicine allows medical information to be transferred via telephone, the internet or other networks for the purpose of consulting, and sometimes remote medical procedures or examinations.

The MARTE research team reported that the programmed pioneer experiments of telerobotics at sea (which will be first of its kind on a global level) were due to begin yesterday, continuing until June 11 by doctors and researchers in Cyprus and France.

The research team consists of members from the Technological University of Cyprus (TEPAK), Cyprus Telecommunications Authority (CyTA) specialists in modern Satellite Systems (INMARSAT), Higher Technological Institute, the University Cyprus, the Orleans University and PRISME Institute of France, in collaboration with the Nicosia General Hospital (Radiology Department) and CHR Bourges Hospital in France.

Once completed, the MARTE programme is expected to be adopted across the globe: a small team of very specialised radiologists based in hospital will, provided they have the necessary telerobotic equipment, be able to examine patients in small, far-away hospitals or ambulances or navigable ships or planes (in which they will have the essential telerobotic equipment at their disposal) and could be anywhere in the world.
