Smile QM2 to host landmine 'Roots of Peace' event

Marking the 10th anniversary of the death of Princess Diana, who helped catapult the issue of landmines into the international agenda, two charities are joining forces to stage fundraising events. Cunard Line’s Queen Mary 2 will serve as the venue for one of the events.

The goal of the effort by UK-based Mines Advisory Group (MAG) and US-based Roots of Peace is raising funds to remove landmines and unexploded bombs.

MAG will stage a 10K ‘Spirit of Diana Walk’ through London on April 28. And, on April 30, Queen Mary 2 will begin a six-day Atlantic crossing from New York with a ‘Cruise for Peace ~ Bon Voyage Luncheon’ that will include a ‘Mines to Vines’ reception with wines from Napa Valley’s Grgich Hills. During the luncheon, while QM2 is alongside at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal, Jordan’s Queen Noor and vintner Miljenko ‘Mike’ Grgich will receive the Roots of Peace 2007 Global Citizen Award.

A percentage of the fares booked for the crossing through You & Leisure Travel will go to Roots of Peace. Cruise and luncheon benefit information: Roots of Peace.
