Lightbulb QM2 to visit Liverpool for the first time in 2009

Quote:
LIVERPOOL is set to welcome the world’s largest ocean liner when Cunard’s colossal flagship Queen Mary 2 visits the line’s spiritual home next year.

The Queen Mary 2’s maiden call to the city on October 20, 2009, will form a highlight in a week-long, round UK cruise to mark the luxurious liner’s first five years in service. The visit of the 151,000 ton vessel is expected to attract thousands of spectators to the banks of the River Mersey. QM2 is the largest, longest, widest, tallest and – at more than £400m – the most expensive ocean liner ever built.

Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth 2 was warmly received in the city in Sep-tember when she visited Liverpool at the opening of the new £19m City of Liverpool Cruise Liner Terminal.

When QM2 berths alongside the new Cruise Liner Terminal next year, the world-famous vessel will provide a spectacular focal point on the city’s revamped waterfront.

The ship is expected to arrive at 11am and is likely to depart around 11pm with a firework spectacular.

Last night news of the arrival of the QM2 on Liverpool’s world heri-tage waterfront was described as a “mouth-watering” prospect that would generate huge interest from around the world.
