Default City hopes to name new Cunard cruise liner

Oct 10 2007
by Neil Hodgson, Liverpool Echo

CRUISE giant Cunard today announced it was commissioning a 92,000-ton liner the Queen Elizabeth – and she could be named in Liverpool.

The £347m vessel will be built at the Italian shipyard Fincantieri and should be ready in the autumn of 2010.

Liverpool council held tentative talks with Cunard, which used to be based on the city’s waterfront, to name its two latest vessels Queen Mary 2 and Queen Victoria in the Mersey. But delays to the city’s new £19m cruise liner terminal dashed those hopes.

Queen Victoria is being named in Southampton on December 10.

Cunard’s giant QE2 visited the city last month on her 40th anniversary tour of the UK.

Council leader Warren Bradley said he hoped to open talks as soon as possible with Cunard on the possibility of the new 2,092-passenger vessel being named in Liverpool.

He said: “We have got to start immediately talking with Cunard for the new ship to be named in Liverpool and have the name of Liverpool on her bow - that is very important to us.”

Cunard president Carol Marlow today told the ECHO: “We appreciate the interest and the offer and we will certainly consider Liverpool because of our links with the city.”

Was it Liverpool that caused QE2 such problems on her recent lap of honour -where she had to have several attempts at docking because of high winds? Perhaps it was a particular problem because of her deep draft, which I don't imagine will apply to the new ship

The new ship has less draught that QE2, you are right, Diana. She is a clone of the Arcadia/Westerdam class of ship...a twin for QV, flat bottomed with pods rather than a classic 'V' with shafts and propellers.
