Pacific Ocean Weather
Hi
On the P & O ss Oriana we cruised these water around New Zealand and the Pacific Islands all year round for about ten years with our cruises starting from Sydney. We had no delays due to bad weather but she had been built for the passenger service between UK and Australia and not just as a cruise ship. That is the main difference tween a cruise ship and an ocean liner, Neil....ocean liners are built to withstand alot more rough stuff

P & O Australian cruises
Hi
Its looks as if the P & O idea of running cruises from Auckland in the winter months needs to be re-thought ! It was only in July 2007 that their Australia cruise ship ' Pacific Star ' got her bow damaged in bad weather which resulted in her passengers being flown home from Vanuatu, Port Vila. Doors and windows were also smashed and some of her satallite equipment damaged. The ship then returned empty to Brisbane to be dry-docked for repairs and cruises were cancelled. During the repairs on Star, it was discovered that she was seriously corroded too, so ended up with even more work than anticipated....they sold her a short time afterwards to Pullmantur.

If someone has indeed died as a result of the storm, it could have been due to a fall or maybe a heart attack after the worst was over. Dreadfully sad for everyone involved, if the death does become confirmed.
Falls during storms have happened before, Athena had a similar incident last year when she encountered heavy seas off Canada, an elderly male passenger fell down some stairs and subsequently passed away. P&O Australia will get some flack, but if the weather is worse than the forecasters say, how can anyone know or do anything about it?
