A 16-year-old from Point has been arrested and charged after he snatched the handbag of a tourist on Sunday.

Reports reaching the Antigua Sun indicate that the British national, who arrived in Antigua aboard the cruise vessel Oceana, was dining at the Beehive Restaurant at Heritage Quay.

The woman reportedly left to go to the restroom sometime about 11 a.m. when she was approached by the youth, who was brandishing a weapon.

Armed with a meat cleaver, he proceeded to pull away her purse which contained US$66 and three pounds sterling. The purse also contained other personal effects.

The teenager then fled the area on foot running in a southerly direction.

His escape was short-lived though, after he was spotted by officers patrolling the area and quickly apprehend. The lawmen managed to retrieve the purse in addition to the weapon.

The teenager was taken into police custody and is expected to go before a St. John’s magistrate.

According to reports the youth has been charged with robbery.
