Lightbulb Aurora - departure delayed so passengers can watch huge firework display

A SOUTHAMPTON cruise ship is to provide a stunning backdrop to one of the biggest charity fireworks displays in Hampshire.

Luxury P&O ship Aurora will provide fireworks fanatics heading to the Daily Echo firework spectacular in Mayflower Park with a bonus of a visual treat.

Bosses at the cruise company have announced they have delayed the 5pm sailing of the ship so that passengers can watch the firework display.

The multi-million pound ship, which carries nearly 2,000 passengers, will pull alongside Mayflower Park for the duration of the display before continuing on to the Caribbean.

A P&O spokeswoman said: "Aurora will be staying in Southampton Water until 7.30pm to enable passengers to enjoy the firework celebrations taking place in Mayflower Park.

"This will be a spectacular send off for our passengers and also will provide an impressive backdrop for spectators watching the fireworks from the shore."

Organisers Southampton Round Table have spent more than £7,000 making sure visitors will be blown away by the evening's skyline explosions, and are hoping to raise even more for charity than the £16,000 generated last year.

It is the 14th year that Southampton Round Table has held the event in Mayflower Park.

Southampton's hospital-based Radio Lollipop, who will be broadcasting from the park, Wellbeing, and child bereavement charity Simon Says are some of the worthy causes set to benefit from the night.

The festivities begin at 2pm when families can enjoy all the fun of the fair as Coles' funfair arrives in town to kick-start the event with a host of amusement rides. Admission costs £3 for adults and £2 for children.

Tickets are available in advance from the Daily Echo shop in Hanover Buildings or the tourist information centre.
