AN ELLESMERE Port woman chose a luxury cruise as the perfect way to celebrate her 100th birthday.

Bertha Edge, who was born on May 2, 1907, went on the P&O Cruises trip with her daughter Gillian Edge.

At the end of last month, they departed from Southampton for a 25-night Mediterranean Odyssey on board Artemis.

Bertha celebrated her landmark birthday while the ship was in Kusadasi, Turkey.

Zak Coombs, executive purser on board Artemis said, 'In 30 years at sea I've never had the opportunity to help someone celebrate such a momentous birthday. It was a memorable occasion for all the crew.'

Mrs Edge started her day with a complimentary champagne breakfast, and Captain Peter Philpott presented her with the traditional birthday card from HRH the Queen.

Later that afternoon 100 crew members, organised by passenger services manager Liz Kelly and staff Captain Sarah Breton, gathered on the quayside and formed the shape of the number '100' to sing Happy Birthday and give three cheers for a very special lady.

Mrs Edge observed the event from the Bridge wing of the ship, while passengers on the open decks and balconies joined in with the singing.

I think that is a wonderful way to celebrate a birthday...even moreso a 100th. I bet there wasn't a dry eye on the ship...what a great memory to share
