The list of suitable ships available is getting shorter. Most of the low pax vessels are either scrapped, on their way to be scrapped or will need substantial amounts of investment to bring them up to SOLAS2010 standards. There are not many younger ships of the size wanted around/available.
Certainly will be interesting to see what they come up with, fleet wise.

So the rumour mill is at full tilt as to the first ship to join the 'new' Orient Lines...
First contender in the 'first ship of the fleet' is the venerable, much loved & very distinctive Maxim Gorkiy. She is due to be released from her current owner, Phoenix Reisen, near the end of 2008.

checked some of the cruise ships for sale sites, there are a few low passenger solas ones about, but they don't give you much info i.e. don't tell what ship's they are by name.

I would love to see Maxim as the first ship of the new Orient Lines fleet. She has a similar pedigree to the wonderful Marco Polo and she would certainly suit the role perfectly.
She would definately make an excellent choice IMHO.

A potential runner in the fleet choices is Topaz. Granted she has been recently damaged whilst at anchor off Singapore, but she is in pretty decent order and probably wouldn't take too much of a refit to bring her up to standard. Her last refurbishment was in 1998, so not that long ago especially when you consider that she has not been in commercial use since then.
Another slightly smaller vessel that is now available is Dalmacija. She is a really nice little ship, refurbished at the start of 2008. And something completely off the wall and different, Asia Star is up for sale too. She is the big cat that was owned by Radisson (now RSSC). It will be very interesting to see what is announced in the coming weeks
