Unusual accident leaves passenger with leg amputation

OK...this is a nasty accident but surely when on a ship in blazing hot temps, you should be aware that metal will get hot...whether it be a door handle or part of the deck structure. Its like frying an egg on a shovel...if metal gets hot, it will burn you, so due care and attention ought really be the onus of the passenger?
For example, Allegra has stainless steel door handles...including out onto the open deck spaces. The fact I was getting burnt out there made me realise that chances were that the door handles in direct sunlight would be hot too, and they were, so a towel or whatever around the handle stopped getting scorched. Considering that the bulk of decking is either wood or acrylic coating, and very few areas are metal, I am struggling to understand where this man put his feet in order to get so badly burned.
