As soon as I spotted “canyoning” in Ocean Village’s shore excursion booklet, I knew that my fate for our day in Villefranche was sealed. I tried to tempt my daughter Ilana with another almost-as-exciting option, but I knew I was wasting my breath.
So here I was, one of the eldest among a group of about 12 mad Britons, about to while away the next couple of hours scrambling over rocks and boulders in a river, in water that registered a very chilly 15C.
Because this was France, there was no ceremony. Our changing room - “ wetsuits are a must, not just because of the cold but for protection against the rocks” - was a canvas sheet spread on the ground of a lay-by beside the narrow winding road we had followed from Nice. .....
