Exclamation NCL Star - Engine fault not a Fire as first reported

VICTORIA - There's been a small fire in the engine room of a cruise ship off the B.C. coast, but no one was hurt.

Steve Church of the Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Victoria says the crew of the Norwegian Star reported the fire occurred as the result of a leaky fuel valve.

He says the fire was small enough to be put out by hand and the ship's fire suppression system was not used.

Church says the 321-metre liner is now in Prince Rupert, one of its scheduled stops as it returned south from an Alaskan cruise.

He says investigators from the Transportation Safety Board will inspect the ship to determine what happened.

The Norwegian Cruise Line says it was an engine problem -- not a fire as originally reported -- that occurred yesterday on the Norwegian Star near Prince Rupert, British Columbia. The Miami-based company says a component failure has knocked out one of the ships four main diesel engines. The cruise line says the ship is safe. The Norwegian Star is due back in Seattle tomorrow at eight on the morning, one hour behind schedule.
