Embarkation: Being on a Cruise Only basis we made our own way to the terminal by 12.15 and were in our cabin by 12.50 which is good and in fact faster than we managed to check-in to our hotel in Las Vegas post...

Peebeegee,
I am sorry you feel you had a bad cruise. (although what other cruisers are wearing on the ship is not going to deter me from having a good cruise.) I can't believe that you are knocking Carnival based on what a couple of disgruntled pax are saying. I am all excited to go on my first cruise on CARNIVAL, and reading your words has NOT lessened that excitement. To me any cruise would be wonderful, after all a vacation is what YOU make of it! I intend to enjoy myself to the fullest on the Carnival Spirit to Alaska!
Julie, who is actually looking forward to be on Carnival

Well, a cruise is what you make of it to a certain extent.

It depends on how many things you have to overlook to accomplish that end.

People wearing modest dress is appreciated in public rooms regardless of the expense of the trip, cruiseline, etc.

It is discouraging to see too much skin wandering around the ship. No one says the clothes have to be from Barneys in N.Y. but it would be nice if they covered you, were appropriate to the occasion and modest, meaning your butt is not hanging out !

There are all types of cruises. If you go on one line several times, you come to expect a certain level of cruise on it. This is how you can decide what line you like the best and want to book most often.

When you find that the line has changed or let one ship slip from the previous standard, it is really hard to accept being that you paid hard earned money to be there.

One can make some lemonade out of the lemon but it should not add up to a bathtub of the stuff ! A glass would be enough.

Carnival to many people ( never cruised on it ) represents a more active type of cruise. More casual dress. This may be changing with their newer ships.
In the past they did ads that were heavy with "The Party Cruise " idea. This meant to many that there would be more drinking, pool games and general activity. In recent ads they look like they are trying to woo the older generation.

But they will have to battle their rep. as a floating frat party.

I have talked to people that have cruised both Carnival and NCL, some were happy, others were not at all happy.

The cruiselines are not all alike. You hope to find a match with your idea of a good vacation and then book with the hope that the service will remain of that standard you enjoy.

Paul went on board expecting the type of NCL cruise that he had experienced in the past. The experience had changed and no longer is his type of cruise.

The same thing has happened to us with Celebrity. It is still a good line but it is not the cruise experience we enjoyed in past years.

The one thing on this board that makes it so delightful is being able to post your experience without any personal comments in return. ( only in very obvious jest when they are done )

We have tried very hard to appreciate our different takes on the subjects posted.

When you are posting about a cruise vacation, you are posting your experience and passing along that information.

Paul is just giving his take on his cruise and comparing it to what other cruisers on Carnival have told him. This makes his comments from his personal viewpoint valid.

When you post after coming back from a less than stellar performance, your disappointment is obvious and comes through in your review.

I, for one, if they would let me cruise for free would give cruiselines more
of a pass for less than good service, etc.

But we pay to go on these cruises and for most of us it is not easy to do so very often.

In response to anyone's post of their cruise, it is to hoped that you can mention that you had a better experience but never, never negate the posters experience. It was their experience.

None of us, in my mind, ever post a negative comment in hopes of having others avoid a certain line. Nor do we post to say we doubt your cruise experience.

That all being said and maybe it should not be said, but I really want us to remain free to post our true concerns on a cruise experience.

I can't believe that you are knocking Carnival
Sorry Julie but you appear to have completely misunderstood what I wrote! What I said, and what I repeat now, is that it is my belief that NCL more closely compares in standards to Carnival than to say RCI or Princess; where in that is a knock against Carnival? I merely think that if you like a cruise on Carnival you will probably feel right at home on NCL.
Some of my knowledge re Carnival comes not from previous passengers but from a port agent in Hawaii who handles most cruise lines including RCI and Carnival; you would not believe some of the horror stories he had to tell.
At the end of the day you pay your money and take your choice.
I hope you have a great time on Carnival Spirit and look forward to reading all about it.
Cheers. Paul

Dani,
You are misunderstanding what I am saying. A person can't say a certain cruiseline is bad, IF they have NEVER cruised it. Yes, Carnival is /was a party ship; however, in Alaska, all reports say that Carnival is NOT a party ship.
I know that Paul has been on NCL and value his input for that reason. I was thinking of doing NCL next fall ( Canada/ NE ) but probaby will not go on that line now.
I know people are human and the employees on the ship are workers of the cruiseline, not our personal slaves. I have read a lot of reviews and tend to take things with a grain of salt. If I have to make lemonade on the ship then that is what I will do. I have saved and planned this cruise for 4 + years and NOTHING is going to stop me from having a good time. After all ...I am a) in a new and exciting place b) with my wonderful hubby c) NOT AT WORK, but on a cruise ship.
Do I expect things to be perfect?? of course not; that would be completely foolish. I will report when I return; perhaps Paul is right, but I will give first hand info; not what others have said.
And really I doubt if I see much "skin" or butts hanging out in Alaska, but IF I do, that can not keep me from having a good time. I will however, complain to Maite' D IF I see inappropriate attire in the dinning room.
Paul:
I appreciate your review of NCL. I just thought it a bit strange that you would compare them to Carnival, a line that you personally have not been on.( if you did not mean that Carnival was a bad line, then I am sorry, but I read it as such.) I was not criticizing your review at all, only questioning the comparison. I have planned this cruise for a long time and I will enjoy it. I will also post a review here when I return. Perhaps you are right, perhaps not; either way I will tell the truth and not sugar coat the information.
Julie, anxiously awaiting my first cruise

Julie - how do you know whether or not I have been on Carnival
Nobody on this board knows where I have been, with whom and for how long I am not trying to prove anything to anybody and will carry on in the same way
Off to Greece (land based) in a fortnight.
Cheers. Paul

I'm throwing my 2 cents worth in.

I love hearing everyones experiences on various ships/cruise lines. But I will still go on a ship or line just to experience it for myself. We have been on various ships and lines and they are each very different. We intend to try HAL and NCL regardless of what others say. AND...we will have a great time!

If its your first cruise, you will have a good time. You will only know whether it was great until you have something to compare it to.

Case in point, my brother and his girlfriend joined us on a cruise several years ago. Their first but not one of our favorite cruiselines (name doesn't matter). They had a fantastic time! A couple of years later they went on another cruise on a different line and then realized that their was a difference between cruise lines.

Everyone has their own opinions, likes and dislikes. So you have to experience it and form your own opinions.

Now we need to abandon this thread.

This is going in the direction of a Cruise Critics thread and WE simply cannot let our site develop this type of thread.

We should not be drawn any further into a debate that will not resolve anything.

Dear friends, the only way to keep the board a happy place is not to encourage this discussion.

Just my opinion ( but in my mind the one that counts )
