I agree with cruise queen, I can't imagine wanting to bowl on a cruise ship. Lots of gutter balls I would bet.

Default I would much prefer -

- to go bowling on a cruise ship then to get in a boxing ring (Freedom of the Seas) and get pounded. It is apparent that the cruise lines are now trying to become inovative with what they provide on a ship so that the ship is the attraction and not the ports.

I find bowling on a ship interesting and would definitely try it given the chance. I can't see it being that difficult unless there are rough seas, in which they would likely have it sut down.

I am still waiting for Liz's "Keelhauler"; a go kart track; batting cages and the return of skeet shooting.

Vic.

Sorry everyone.....have to agree with Cruise Queen & Vic - just when, if ever will cruiseships return to what they do best...hellooooo .....actually CRUISING between one port and another. Funnily enough, I find the chance to cruise to parts of the world I have never seen before....is the main attraction when choosing a cruise. Silly me

Now, I always find plenty to do during my days 'at sea'..call me old-fashioned (or whatever), but I do enjoy that feeling of 'journeying' from once place (country/continent...whatever) to another. Let's face it...travel by aircraft will get you to where you want to go fairly quickly these days in a few hours...but by ship...it has a real purpose and meaning.

Maybe I'm too old (fashioned), but I don't need rock-climbing walls, bowling alleys, ice skating rinks, go-kart tracks (it has got to happen) etc. Actually, I will gleefully leave the trappings of 'real life' behind!

I'll happily stay in my 'rut'.....cocktail in one hand, good book in the other,...no mobile, computers or the like, listening/watching the ocean go by....re-discovering the art of conversation with my shipmates, due to the lack of the aforementioned electronic 'distractions'. All the while cursing my stressful life. Which is.....1. is it too early for a cocktail?....and 2. what shall I wear for dinner tonight?...oh, sigh...can't you just tell I have PCD very badly after 37 nights.??

Default Bigger ships-more amenities

For me, cruising and being on the sea is the attraction of my new found love of cruising. But look at how and why cruise lines are growing. Possibly more folks are cruising because ports of departure are closer to home thus avoid flying, prices have come down with more ships in the market, cruising has become a FAMILY attraction with value and every possible attraction to keep the KIDS BUSY so the parents can enjoy the pampering and not have to race around and "keep up with the kids". My 13 year old son has only 1 pre-requisite when we look at a ship-BASKETBALL COURT!!.

I would be intrested if there are any figures out there of what percentage of cruisers are single, couples or families ?

Bob

Ah Bob...I think we will 'agree to disagree'? That's the great thing about cruising!!!!! It is fabulous that you and your family can now enjoy one of the best vacations there is!

I take your point about 'ports of departure' being close to home, but unfortunately that doesn't apply to me! A long way for most Aussies to cruise (and I've been cruising some 30 years or so). Actually, it's a long way for an Aussie to travel anywhere....we are used to it, and it is 'part and parcel 'of living where we are.

No doubt, the 'bottom line' is what cruiselines are all about these days...or to put it in 'shipspeak'...the ONBOARD YIELD'. Cruises for those of you in the US are cheaper and cheaper and they really make their money with onboard activities, drinks, excursions etc., and offer terrific family amenities.

AND to make matters worse, while I constantly see fabulous 'bargains' on the internet for cruises leaving from some of your most popular departure ports.....we here in Oz, and I understand also Brits, CANNOT book them as we are non-US residents.

There are no doubt some statistics around for 'singles, couples & families', but it won't include too many of us. And don't get me started about 'single cabins'!

Most times when I cruise, I am on a line which includes passengers from an international core....which I love, but no matter the itinerary, sometimes I just cannot get a cabin for a 'reasonable' price.

By comparison, just so you don't all think I'm complaining too much...the cruise Liz is doing with me next February, has...I believe NOT been advertised outside of Australia (most unusual for Princess) and so she will most likely have the distinction of being the only American onboard...a role which I am sure she will relish. I'm also sure there would be quite a number of Americans who would love to do this itinerary - a full circumnavigation of Australia.

I have no idea why it was not opened up to bookings worldwide, other than the inaugural cruise last year being booked out in 2 days and being Pacific Princess, she only holds 700 pax.

I just wish I had the opportunity (give or take the odd bowling alley) to be able to book a cruise at a reasonable price that my lucky US friends seem to have. I am most likely on a whole different tack...than the original discussion, but that's the beauty of this forum.

PS...if anyone knows of a cruise agent who can/will accept bookings from a non-US resident.....I'd be thrilled to know...and will immediately send you a case of your favourite 'adult beverage'
