More than 70 crew members of the Norwegian Majesty took part in an environmental clean-up around St. George's last week.

The group split up into three teams and walked around the parish collecting trash from the beaches and roadsides. They collected several cubic metres of trash in total.

"We want to keep the Island clean and beautiful," said crew activities coordinator Flavia Merschmann.

"We are planning to have this event at least once a month. Staying for three and a half days in St. George's every week, makes us feel part of your community."

What a great idea! I'm sure at least some of that trash was produced by cruise ship passengers. Hmm...maybe it's a new excursion idea for pax too. Help the environment where you visit.

I have made 5 consecutive trips to Bermuda via cruise ships, last week was the fourth on the Majesty (last year went on the Zenith from N.J.). My wife and I enjoy the trip and really look forward to visiting the island every year. However, I have never been entirely impressed with the cleanliness. I'm always disappointed with the amount of trash and dead seaweed that exist on the beaches (especially St. Catherine's, Warwick Long Bay). Given the alure of Bermuda and the attraction of it's beaches, you would think they would rake (towed from a small tractor) the beaches on a regular basis (like they do in many other seaside communities). This would certainly make them much more enjoyable.
