Default SS United States.

Will drinking my morning coffee and reading the Sunday paper, I came across a article about the SS United States. It is presently moored in Phila and according to the article NCL struck a deal to put it back into service. They could sail Hawaii since the ship was built in the states and would not have to visit a foreign port.

I keep reading bits and pieces about this.......THINK somewhere read also that some kind of a decision awaited the new SOLAS guidelines that are supposed to be released in MAY??????

Here is ONE link that might prove helpful. I met the webmaster at a NY Ship Society memoribilia sale, last July.

BUT, it somehow doesn't seem so likely. The pictures I have seen of her lately really make me want to cry

That would be such a shame to put a "Blue Riband" winner in the Hawaii market. Slowly cruising between islands. She needs a fierce ocean to cross at Full Steam Ahead.

I was sure that we had seen her ...oh...20 years ago on a tour of Norfolk Bay.

So I opened up her history and yep. We sure did see her at that time.

When I was in high school several of the girls took family cruises on her.

It was quite "the posh thing " to take a cruise on her.

Now THAT would be the real "round the world" cruise of ALL the Millenniums

Can you IMAGINE. The SS United States departs New York, destinations (to name a few)...Cape Horn......Hawaii (briefly), Sydney... ZANZIBAR

I would bet that NCL/Star made this purchase to keep CCL or RCL from getting in on their Hawaii monoply. If NCL/Star drops any more money on this ship it will be a miracle. Don't forget Star has all the old ships from NCL to absorb and I don't think there are that many folks that want to cruise in Asia. Star will have to start selling or scrapping ships.

Yes, and don't forget, NCL still owns the Independence, languishing in San Francisco, I think. Another ship that will not sail again

Cool

Thanks for the information Liz, I learn something from this group almost daily. I did not know that NCL/Star owned the Independence. I guess both of these old grand ships have the same issue as the Norway, lots of asbestos issues.

It is really ashame that these old ships cannot be restored. I cruised Hawaii on the Independence in 1998. At least I will always have those memories. She was a beautiful ship back then.
