I read on MaritimeMatters (Shipping News, May 24, 06) that Colin Veitch of NCL was questioned about the SS Independence and SS United States. They are still considering bringing the SSUS back and making it the fourth ship of the NCLA fleet. Before NCL purchased the ship, most of the insides were stripped removing most of the hazardous materials. This may make it more reasonable to restore for future service. Here is a link that has some great interior photos of the ship:

Mr. Veitch went on to say that the previous owners of the SS Independence had not laid up the ship properly and that there was some serious damage that may preclude it from being able to return to service. I do recall that shortly after NCL purchased her, they moved her due to a silting problem where she was initially laid up.
