Question Pride of Aloha - Food for thought

Perhaps 'food for thought' might be the wrong way to describe this.

As everyone now knows, Pride of Aloha is due to leave the NCLA fleet in 9 days time. The last CDC inspection of the ship done in December last year sort of indicates that perhaps the crew & staff knew that the ship was going....

Vessel Sanitation Program: Cruise Ship Inspection Details | CDC

Now the CDC have a scoring system, over 85 is a pass, under it and its trouble. Pride of Aloha scored a measly 78 last December. The inspectors found maggots alive in pooled water under drink dispensing machines in the buffet, contaminated ice-cream maker and a variety of other cringe worthy faults.

So begs the question...did the crew know back in December that they would be out of a job come May this year and decided not to keep everything spick & span on board Pride of Aloha....or are the problems listed just confirmation that NCLA ships just don't measure up to the foreign crewed countaparts?

I'll let you decide....

Generally the NCL ships have been tween 86 and 95 average. The thing is that NCLA went public about her leaving the fleet in February 2008...this last CDC check was done just before Christmas 2007.

(NCLA ships are usually inspected by the FDA, whereas internationally flagged are done by the CDC, therefore it does appear to be the case that NCL had decided to drop Aloha from NCLA fleet at least 2 months prior to the announcement regarding her removal, otherwise she would not have been inspected by CDC in December).

NCL Corp. told federal health officials that it fixed problems which caused Pride of Aloha to fail a sanitation inspection in December. The Pride of Aloha, which has been sailing in Hawaii under the NCL America brand, scored a failing 78 on Dec. 21 during an inspection required as part of the Centers for Disease Control's Vessel Sanitation Program. The inspection report lists a variety of infractions, including poorly refrigerated foods, inadequate sneeze guards on buffet lines, improper chlorine levels in a whirlpool, and insect larvae in pooled water on the floor near a beverage station. In a follow-up report, NCL said all those problems were addressed, many within a week of the failing score. New cleaning routines were established for many areas, including the beverage stations, and hot tubs are tested hourly. Kitchen staff was trained in proper food handling, and are subject to daily and random inspections. The Pride of Aloha is leaving the NCL America fleet on May 11 and will be transferred to Star Cruises, NCL's parent company along with Apollo Management.
