NCL cuts staff at Miami headquarters
Quote:
Norwegian Cruise Line has laid off an undisclosed number of employees at its Miami headquarters, citing cutbacks in its troubled Hawaii operations and a reduction in its fleet size for 2008.
A memo given to employees said: "Due to the downsizing of NCL America and a reduction in overall capacity for 2008, NCL has made a business decision to eliminate certain positions," the Miami Herald reported Friday.
The company declined to comment on the layoffs.
In the memo, which was obtained by the newspaper, NCL said affected employees would be given a severance pay based on a formula of two weeks of salary for each year of service completed, up to a maximum of 26 weeks.
NCL reported a $227 million loss in 2007 and recently cut back its Hawaii operations.
In February, it pulled the Pride of Hawaii, now renamed the Norwegian Jade, from interisland service. The ship will now operate in the Mediterranean.
A second ship, the Pride of Aloha, will be renamed and transferred to Asia in May, leaving only the Pride of America in Hawaii.
