Monarch - passenger medevaced
SAN DIEGO -- A cruise ship passenger was evacuated from the Royal Caribbean cruise liner Monarch of the Seas as it sailed past San Diego en route to its home port in Los Angeles, the Coast Guard reported.
The 64-year-old passenger had suffered a heart attack Saturday night and was evacuated by Coast Guard officers Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
The ship came within four miles of shore to allow officers to evacuate the passenger onto a 41-foot Coast Guard vessel.
He was taken ashore and handed over to paramedics for transport to a local hospital.
He is reported to be in stable condition, said Coast Guard Officer Mark Mutchler.
This is the second time in three days that local Coast Guard officers had to medevac a ship passenger.
On Thursday night, a Coast Guard crew evacuated a 49-year-old man from a Brenton Reef vessel who was complaining of chest pains.
"We do it a lot," Mutchler said. "A lot of people get medevaced off cruise ships when they pass by here."
The Monarch of the Seas is a 2,744-guest cruise ship that calls out of Los Angeles on three-day tours to Ensenada, Mexico.
