Celebrity Millennium 4/30/06 Transatlantic

Default Celebrity Millennium 4/30/06 Transatlantic

Day of embarkation was cold and windy in Ft. Lauderdale. Embarkation was a breeze with the Express pass. All info was already in the computer, they checked our passports and we walked right on the ship. NO waiting whatsoever!

Our concierge class cabin was very nice. Fresh fruit, flowers, chilled champagne waiting! Mario, our attendant was fantastic! Canapés delivered each evening at 5! Not sure where they get their flowers from but their roses were the most beautiful roses I have ever seen.

Muster drill was at 5:15 – very organized. Our group met in the theatre and then we were taken out on deck to our lifeboat.

Freeport was our first port. Not a lot to do there in my opinion. I think they bunkered fuel here - probably cheaper than in Ft. Lauderdale. Wandered around a bit then went back on board to explore the ship.

Bermuda is lovely as always! But, since we have been there several times, we did not do much there.

Sea days! Lots of R&R! Fairly smooth crossing…a few white caps on a couple of days which Millennium handled very well. I read “Russka” – thanks for that tip, Cliff! It is a must read for anyone going to Russia. I also spent a lot of time in the AquaSpa pool!

Lisbon was fantastic as always! Jackie, the Tram tour is a must! Shuttle from the ship is no longer free - $8 to $12 per person now depending on the port.

Gibraltar was my favorite port of call on this itinerary! We took ship’s tour to the top. The Rock Apes loved Mike. A rather large one jumped right on top of his head! Scared the “you know what” out of him! Sadly, Mike had the camera so I was unable to get a picture.

In Malaga we took a horse-drawn carriage tour. Lots of fun! Then wandered around on our own and got lost! We wound up in an area that probably no tourist has ever seen before! The map provided was no help whatsoever but thanks to a policeman we got back on track!

Valencia is a lovely city. We explored on our own and enjoyed lunch in an outdoor café.

Disembarkation was a bit confusing in Barcelona. We met in the theatre, were guided off the ship, collected our luggage, and then no one was around to clarify where exactly we were supposed to go. So many busses!!! We finally found the right one. In Barcelona we took the ship’s tour and transfer to the airport. Wonderful tour! Gaudi’s Church of the Holy Family is magnificent!

We arrived at the airport early for our flight to Copenhagen. Checked our luggage and wandered around. We arrived in Copenhagen around 10 pm to discover one of Mike’s suitcases was lost. We spent the night at the Hilton Airport Hotel which was very nice. Mike spent the next morning on the phone with Spanair trying to find his suitcase!

Highlights
Millennium is a beautiful ship. Even though there were 2,400 passengers onboard, the ship never felt crowded. The food was excellent! Dinner at the Olympic Restaurant was superb! Thanks for that tip, Jeff! Service was outstanding! I cannot comment on the shows since Mike and I prefer the casino and a nice piano bar after dinner. We were both lucky in the casino! Mike plays craps and I like the slots. Michael’s Club was our pre and post dinner favorite! We met Rex & Leta (LEESRE) at the CC party. The AquaSpa pool – no ship should be without one!!!

Lowlights
Not really much to say here. The in-cabin breakfast menu was awesome except the hot foods always arrived cold. And, whatever happened to WARM dinner rolls? When did cruise lines start charging for shuttles, in-cabin movies, and a cup of cappuccino after dinner? Like I said, there was not much to complain about here.

Would we ever cruise on Millennium again? Yes, in a heartbeat!!!

Being a long time "Former " Celebrity cruiser, I am glad to hear that the food was good.

It was horrible on the Zenith last fall. Now charging for the in cabin movies has not gone over to HAL or Princess. But even 2 years ago on Summit we found them doing that little number. Tacky !

A far cry from our first cruise on Celebrity where they even gave you a TV guide just for the shows being shown that week.

HAL has the best HOT in cabin breakfasts. In my humble opinion.

The sea days would be wonderful. I love ports but always wish for more days at sea.

Warm dinner rolls.

In this day and age if they furnished them, they would probably microwave them and then they would be hard as a rock. Seems the microwave is being used on everything .

Charging for shuttles seems to be sweeping the lines...bad move...but another bean counter strikes a blow for stock holders

Thanks for the review, I would enjoy a transatlantic cruise.

They DID charge for the shuttles on HAL....BIG TIME However, also discovered that it was not all that difficult to get on without a ticket

I was so pleased to see that you enjoyed your Gibraltar stop, I grew up there and have found that most people either love it or hate it!

The Apes can be a crabby bunch though - I've had one bite through my hand - he'd taken a liking to my car and took offence when I tried to climb back in it

Yikes! As I opened the van door to step out one hopped on my shoulder and into the back seat of the van! Happened so quickly that I did not even realize what was going on until I heard the three ladies in the back seat scream! It was a tiny one but still a little scary! Our tour guide assured us he was no threat! I did see a man lose his baseball cap to one and another man was nipped on the hand...not seriously thank goodness. Best advice when visiting the apes is to use caution. They really can be agressive!

For many years the only place you could see and get up close to them was by the middle section of the cable car (around 1/2 way up the rock).

However a wild pack learnt that food was available at the top of the cable car ride and decided this was easy pickings. Unfortunately this was also where a disco was held on Saturday nights - believe me you didn't want to venture too far in the dark with a packet of crisps in your hand

Thanks for the review Terry, dont like the idea of paying for shuttles, hope Cunard do not take that up. I got lost in Malaga the first time I went so it must the the city is confusing.

Terrific review Terry - seems like you really enjoyed Millie - I must try Celebrity some time!

As for shuttles, seem to remember we had to pay HAL for one of them (can't remember which port - maybe Dubrovnik because Rotterdam was berthed so far away?) on our Med cruise with you & Mike last year.

Don't forget Celebrity is sending Mercury 'down under' 2007/2008 Off now to read your other 2 cruise reports

Yes, Robyn, I do remember paying for a shuttle at one port on HAL last year. Mike seems to think it was around $5.00 -- seems the price has about doubled!
