Smile Hapag-Lloyd Sets Great Lakes Itineraries

Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, the German line, next year is offering a series of cruises in the Great Lakes by the 420-passenger Columbus for the ninth year. Three bilingual cruises–in English as well as the ship's usual German–are offered in autumn 2007, providing the opportunity to visit four states, two Canadian provinces, and all five lakes during a 10- or 11-day voyage. In addition, the Columbus will offer a bilingual repositioning cruise with a golf theme from Toronto to Miami in October 2007. The bilingual English/German Great Lakes cruises for 2007 include a Sept. 17-27 cruise from Toronto to Chicago; a Sept. 27-Oct. 8 roundtrip from Chicago; and an Oct. 8-18 voyage from Chicago to Toronto. The repositioning golf cruise from Toronto to Miami departs Oct. 18 and will sail through the St. Lawrence Seaway and visit Gaspé, Canada; Halifax, Nova Scotia; Boston (golf course: Stow Acres Country Club); Cape Cod Canal; Newport, R.I.; New York City; Baltimore (golf course: Mountain Branch Golf Club); Charleston, Md. (golf course: Harbour-Course Wild Dunes); Savannah, Ga.; and Port Canaveral (golf course: Cocoa Beach Country Club). Cruise ship not coming back next year
Written by Jim Birchard

This fall will be the last time residents in Tobermory, Midland, Parry Sound and Little Current will get a chance to see the cruise ship Columbus.

The 423 passenger luxury liner will not be on the Great Lakes in 2008 because the ships owner -- Hapag Lloyd -- has scheduled the vessel to be in dry dock next fall.

Stephen Brunett is with the Great Lakes Cruising Coalition. He hopes the company will schedule the ship to be back in Georgian Bay and the Great Lakes for 2009.

Brunett says 2009 will be a busy time on the lakes as two new 100 passenger cruise ships will be operating on the lakes in addition to the Columbus.

Brunett says for Georgian Bay communities -- the increased cruise ship activity could translate into increased economic benifits when the vessels visit their ports.

However he says communities have to entice the ships and their passengers with interesting shore excurisions and cultural tourism festivals.

The Columbus stopped in Tobermory and Parry Sound last month and will stop at Little Current and Midland this month.
