The Cayman Islands is the only remaining Caribbean cruise ship destination without modern port infrastructure and amenities, including berthing facilities. The absence of visionary planning for the cruise ship industry is a threat to its future sustainability.
The number of cruiser passengers visiting Grand Cayman between January and June of this year has declined by 14.5 percent compared to the same period last year. Industry participants are expressing concern over the management and the absence of a vision for this important component of the Island’s economy.
Currently all cruise ship passengers visiting the Cayman Islands disembark by tenders, which results in long waits to embark and disembark. Studies have shown that ports with berthing facilities experience a greater economic contribution from the cruise industry.
