Photos of very heavy weather for QE2 & QV on their Transatlantic crossing
These photos are quite incredible. The weather 'looks' beautiful...but the seas state is certainly not....(least not for anyone with seasickness)...QE2 is out of the water and QV is trying to be a submarine...
Apparently QV has now fallen behind QE2.
QE2 is on schedule for her arrival at New York, uncertain on QV.

Looking at QV, I am wondering if she picked up any damage by ducking her snout like that. She doesn't seem to handle heavy seas very well...but then all the ships built in her style seem to have problems, Arcadia did last year on her TA.
QE2 on the other hand looks fairly stable in comparison...although I imagine everyone is getting quite an 'interesting' ride out of her. She was built for the Atlantic crossing, so should (by rights) deal with the sea state alot better anyway.
The fact that QV has slowed down makes me think she might have scored a few problems/damage maybe.

Goodness glad I wasn't sat on the deck on QV, would of gotten mighty wet.

What about those with the expensive forward facing balcony cabins.....I guess all the watertight doors will have been closed, so little point in having a balcony if you can't use it....

Looks like the same type of weather we had on our crossing last April. We were told that the grinding noise we heard was from the AziPods coming out of the water. The all of the windows from deck 3 and below were sealed, in effect turning outside cabins into inside cabins. We had a balcony which beleive it or not we used every day.

I think the difference in the way QE2 and QV handle the heavy seas is basically the difference between an "ocean liner" and a "floating resort hotel." That difference is also very noticeable in a strong cross-wind. As to "the AziPods coming out of the water," that is some serious pitching!
I have no way of knowing if it was true about the azipods. I was told this by one of the bartenders. We were in the Safari club which is the bar at the aft of the Jewel of the Seas. I just know that from time to time there was a loud grinding noise in the rear of the ship.
We had several days of 30 foot swells and 70 mph winds due to a nor'easter off of the east coast of the US. The captain changed course and we had much smoother sailing. The weather was bad enough that the welcome aboard party was held on day 5 instead of day 2 as the captain didn't feel he should leave the bridge.
All I can say is thank goodness for Bonine!

I posted a reply that got lost in cyberspace. Oh, well...
Barb, I'm sorry if it sounded like I was disputing the comment about the azipods. It is certainly possible for the azipods to break the surface. But they are deeper in the water and farther forward on the hull than were the more "traditional" screws (propellers). So it would indeed take major pitching (fore-and -aft motion) to cause the azipods to break the surface. It is certainly possible, however, and I have also experienced a Nor'easter on a cruise ship. It ain't fun!
I also supsect that when the Captain changed course to smooth the ride, the amount of roll (side-to-side motion) increased as the amount of pitch decreased. But both ships and passengers are more tollerant of roll than pitch.
